I love contemporary art. It can be defined as work made today, by artists who are still alive (or at least very recently deceased). So you’re opening a contemporary art gallery and want it to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible? Perhaps you just bought one from MystikRiver and need to know how to bring the best out of it. Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Here we go:
Get the right colour scheme
Contemporary art can come in any shape or size, which makes it great for galleries because they can set up various configurations. However, one thing that doesn’t change is that you need to think carefully about what colours you use.
Work with the same colour palette throughout the entire gallery, but pick a variety of hues within each colour. For example, if you want red artwork, choose from different shades rather than just having 5 paintings all of the same shade.
Use minimalist art
Sometimes, less is more! You don’t want to distract your viewers with too many things. Choose a few vibrant pieces that stand out and then choose some calming ones to balance it out.
Make the gallery look somehow related
Work with artwork that has an underlying theme or colour palette so that when you line them up in one room, they inspire each other visually. For example, all of your paintings could be different colours of blue if you are trying to go for a specific vibe – maybe something relaxing?
Similar to how there are no rules when it comes to contemporary artwork, there are also no rules when it comes to where you can put this artwork. You can place paintings on the ground, hang them up side-by-side or even stack them next to each other! I love how unconventional contemporary art can be.
Make sure your gallery is interesting
The most important thing about a gallery is that it’s aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for viewers – but another thing that’s important too is making sure the space itself is exciting. I think galleries are super cool because they are typically in unique spaces, which makes them fun to visit! Check out some of these awesome spaces.
Use pops of colour here and there
Keep the rest of your gallery pretty neutral, with white walls and lots of light. If you have one super vibrant piece, use it as the centrepiece! Most people see this piece first so it will draw their attention from afar.
Set up a nice seating area
If you have people waiting to check out art, they’ll grow tired of standing after a while. Make them comfortable by setting up an interesting seating arrangement nearby, like a couple of chairs or even some pillows on the ground! You could also put out some water bottles or snacks nearby to offer too.
Give your patrons something to read
Most galleries have booklets or large information sheets about the complimentary artwork. This is a great way to keep visitors engaged with what’s going on! It also lets them learn more about the artists, which makes it even more exciting.
Display other art forms
If you’re not trying to open up a contemporary art gallery, but still want this look for your event space, consider other types of visual art too! Install some beautiful light fixtures for an architectural feel, use paintings as backdrops for your buffet table and even print out cool flyers with images from your event to give out as party favours.
Make sure there is enough lighting
Lighting can completely change how an area looks, which is why it’s so important to consider where the light will come from at your event space. If you’re working with a gallery that has its lights, great! If not, bring some of your own to complement what’s already there.
This will also help create different moods throughout if you have specific lights shining on your artwork vs. others highlighting areas outside of the walls.
And that is how you make your contemporary art gallery look amazing! I hope all of these tips help you out. Make sure to check out my blog for more fun art facts!
